The tower on the Old Capitol has been restored of late--with the brass on the pinnacle polished and refurbished. I decided to venture in to see if access to the tower had been restored as well.
As children we would pass the tower on our way home from school and would scramble up (If we could slip away from the cranky Capitol Custodian--Silver.) for some pretty spectacular views in a city of low-rise buildings. The last time I was able to climb to the top was as a summer intern at the Dept of Education almost forty years ago. Since that time, the access stairs have always been chained closed. Today, I bypassed the HARD HAT AREA--KEEPOUT! signs and ventured up. As you can see, one of the newly installed glass windows was even left open....
The view from the top...
Unfortunately, I put the wrong photo here--I had intended to place a shot up Don Gaspar Ave.
View to the Northeast......
To the east is the Annex of the Roundhouse.....
And the Roundhouse itself--where my beloved Dwightie toils amist many turkeys......
The clearest views were out the open window to the west....
And straight ahead....
All the old plexiglass windows were very streaked and difficult to see out of--and those to the south were impossible to see from due to extreme glare on the streaked plexiglass.
